Accept May’s Invitation: Creating A Space for Self-Care

“May I” is an invitation. Let this month be a time for you to acknowledge where you are and accept the invitation to grow into who you are becoming with grace. Self-care creates space for us to experience our feelings while being open to doing things differently without judgment. It is not an endorsement of denying reality; our pain and difficulties are real.

In May, I encourage you to approach each day with compassion for yourself, others, and the world around you. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Create space to make your well-being a priority.  

A question from the Everyday Self-care Workshops inspired today’s Vibrant conversation: “How can I incorporate words of loving-kindness into my day?”

  1. Set aside 5–10 minutes each morning. In a place where you can have some uninterrupted time.
  2. Begin each practice with 4-6 deep cleansing breaths. Take a Breath.
  3. Use a journal or notebook to capture your thoughts Self-Care Journal
  4. Select a loving-kindness statement from the May I Calendar to speak, write, draw, repeat in front of a mirror, or record in your voice. 
  5. Throughout the day, continue to rehearse your statements. Notice how your thoughts and actions with the words. New Affirmation Cards.
  6. What feelings do you experience? Is there something the May I statement inspired you to do? Are you able to think differently about a certain circumstance or person after practicing the May I statements?
  7. Once you’ve spoken the words over yourself, replace the “I” or “My” with the name of a loved one, friend, or challenging person. Offer that same loving-kindness to others. Notice how it makes you feel. Care Package.
