May is Mental Health Awareness Month. The events over the past year have impacted everyone, so a little more love and support won’t hurt. Spend some extra time this month taking care of yourself. Discover what you need most at this moment. Your health is your wealth. Have the courage to do what is best for you.
Here are a few everyday practices for improving mental health: (not to be substituted for seeking professional support)
- Value yourself and what you contribute to each day. Your presence is a gift. Focus on the value that you add to each day.
- Surround yourself with a supportive community that honors you and your feelings. Don’t be afraid to ask for support.
- Discover what brings you joy and choose to be joy-filled moment by moment.
- Take mindful breaths and peace breaks throughout the day to reset your mind. Include movement and water breaks too.
- Journal your thoughts instead of keeping them in your head. Sometimes just doing a simple brain dump helps clear the mind.
- Daily affirmations and expressing gratitude help shift your mind to a more positive and productive state.
- Quiet time and prayer are excellent for reflecting, releasing, and renewing the mind.
- Volunteering to help others may look different because of social distancing but acts of kindness are welcomed.
- Create a wellness plan to support your mind, body, and spirit. Include regular doctor’s visits.
- Get creative! Art is excellent for relieving stress and stirring up the imagination. This can include coloring, puzzles, playing games, jumping rope and gardening.
